$250M worth of Cocaine seized in Record Breaking drug bust.
It has been reported that 2,341 pounds of cocaine were found by Ontario Provincial Police in the single largest drug bust in the academy's history. The haul of 1,000 kilos was worth $250 million dollars in street value.
The drugs were hidden in concrete blocks, so drug sniffing dogs couldn't pick up the scent. Officials told the Toronto Star they got word about the massive delivery from an anonymous tip. The cocaine was shipped from Argentina to Montreal for distribution all over the continent.
Even though they can't say exactly where the drugs were produced, authorities believe there are links to Mexico and Mexican cartels. The investigation is called "Project Hope," where several different police departments and Canadian Agencies united to form a task force.
Deputy Commissioner Rick Barnum commented on the situation, “We’ve never seen anything like this in a single seizure before. They were linked to cocaine being transported on ocean-going vessels in shipping containers to the Port of Montreal for distribution in Ontario and throughout Canada. We believe this cocaine was not solely destined for Ontario, that it had cross-Canada marketplace.”
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities say three men have been arrested in connection with the incident.
