(IBEXNews) - An ex-Georgia police officer who shot and killed a fleeing, unarmed black man was acquitted of voluntary and involuntary manslaughter charges Saturday.

In June 2018, in Kingsland, Georgia, near the Georgia-Florida state line, Zechariah Presley pulled over 33-year-old Tony Green at a traffic stop. Video shows Presley following Green’s car, then the man getting out of his car and fleeing on foot. Green then returned to his car seemingly to get something, at which point Presley ran after him.

After finally catching up to him, Presley fired his stun gun at Green, then his gun several times.

“He was grabbing at my Taser. I kind of tased myself, I think, in the arm maybe,” Presley told another officer who arrived, as heard in the recording. “And then I was going for my gun, and he started taking off. And I fired.”

During the trial, Presley testified that he thought Green was armed when he turned around to face him, but investigators said he was only holding a cell phone.

After 20 hours of deliberation, the Camden County jury cleared Presley of both voluntary and involuntary manslaughter charges, but found him guilty of violating his oath of office.

He faces one to five years in prison at his Oct. 18 sentencing.

“My son was murdered,” Wayne Anderson, Green’s father, told News 4. “The man that murdered my son gets to go home to his sons ... and can only possibly serve 1 to 5 (years) for murder. This ought to serve notice to a lot of our young black men and black men, period, that you can run up and down the football field, you can run on down the courts, you can hit baseballs, you can do it. But at the end of the day, when I see you, they see a black man.”
