(IBEXNews) - A former college student from Tribeca was indicted for murder in the gruesome slaying of his mother, whose body was found mutilated and stuffed in a garbage bag last week.
Jared Eng, 22, did not appear before a judge in Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday but his attorney was notified that a grand jury had rendered a vote in his case.
His attorney Joel Cohen confirmed that Eng was indicted for murder but declined to comment further.
Eng is accused of slashing the neck of 65-year-old Paula Chin and hauling her corpse off to her second home in Morristown, N.J., with the help of his girlfriends Caitlyn O’Rourke, 21, and Jennifer Lopez, 18. Eng was enrolled at SUNY New Paltz last fall; O’Rourke is currently a student there.
Eng confessed to the homicide in a phone call to O'Rourke and callously added that it “took Ms. Chin a while to die,” according to court papers.
Both women admitted to their respective roles in the macabre transport and mop-up job, according to a criminal complaint. The victim was found on Feb. 5, a day after she was reported missing.
Lopez was indicted in connection in the case and made a brief appearance in court Monday.
"There's been no allegation thus far that she took any role whatsoever in the cause of the death of Ms. Chin,” her lawyer David Sachs said afterwards.
All three were initially charged with tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a human corpse.
Authorities waited for autopsy results before upgrading the case against Eng.
The medical examiner ruled Chin’s death a homicide on Friday, due to “multiple blunt impacts of head and stab wounds of (the) neck.”
